Bethlehem Lutheran Church was chartered in 1947 and has continued its’ ministry through years of changing neighborhoods and changing members.  The congregation has gone from being an Augustana Synod Church (Swedes and other northern Europeans) to what is now 60% Mandarin Chinese and 40% Caucasian.

 

 

 

 

Bethlehem is now a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran in America (ELCA). As the Temple City/Arcadia area has changed so the congregation has changed.  Some of our Chinese brothers and sisters are from Taiwan, some from the People’s Republic of China, and some from Hong Kong.We work hard communicating across languages and have many social and worship experiences together. 

We love having bilingual liturgies and celebrating communion together.  Examples are, Chinese New Year, Chinese Harvest Festival, and an annual smorgasbord where everyone is treated to Scandinavian Food.  We love Chinese food and lefse and all things traditional Norwegian and Swedish.

Pastors David Chao and Mary Todd Pendergast are the interim pastors at this time and our intern is Mr. Frank Wang, who is a student at Fuller Seminary and is in process of qualifying for ordination in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.  Our church is governed by a council of 12 made up of both Chinese and English Ministry members and meets the 4th Thursday of the month at 7:30pm

Bethlehem Church is famous for its’ hospitality and friendliness.  It is a loving community where people help each other in times of need and celebrate in times of joy. Our Mandarin congregation meets for worship at 11:00am on Sundays and the English congregation worships at 9:30am.

We have provided space for an Indonesian Congregation that begins at 5pm on Sundays.  This congregation is Pentecostal in worship and a part of the Full Gospel Fellowship or FGF.

We also have a Korean Methodist congregation that uses our facilities and their worship is at 11am on Sundays in our chapel.  All of these ministries we consider outreach to the community and partners with us in sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
